Keir Starmer has revealed a new funding initiative aimed at enhancing security measures in mosques following a recent suspected arson attack on one such facility.
The government has pledged around £10 million to support mosques and Muslim faith centers in safeguarding themselves against hate crimes and malicious assaults. This financial injection will assist in implementing security enhancements like CCTV systems, alarm installations, secure fencing, and security personnel.
During his visit to Peacehaven mosque in East Sussex, Mr. Starmer expressed his deep appreciation, describing the experience as “humbling.” The arson incident on October 4th caused damage to the mosque’s front entrance and a parked car but fortunately did not result in any injuries. Sussex Police confirmed the arrest of three individuals on suspicion of arson intending to endanger life in relation to the fire.
Mr. Starmer emphasized the inclusive nature of Britain, stating, “Attacks on any community are attacks on our entire nation and our values.” He highlighted the importance of this funding in providing Muslim communities with the necessary protection to live peacefully and securely.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood echoed these sentiments, condemning the attack on Peacehaven Mosque and emphasizing the shared responsibility in defending the right to religious freedom and living without fear or hatred.
Akeela Ahmed, CEO of the British Muslim Trust, welcomed the funding support, emphasizing the significance of upholding religious freedom and ensuring a peaceful existence for all individuals, especially within Muslim communities facing unwarranted fear and intimidation due to attacks on their places of worship.
