Klevi Pirjani, 37, defended himself in court against accusations of abusing and killing his three-month-old son, claiming to be an exemplary father. Pirjani and his wife Nivalda Santos Pirjani, 34, are facing trial at Liverpool Crown Court for the murder of their son, Miguel, who suffered fatal injuries last November. Doctors discovered Miguel had severe injuries including a fractured skull, brain bleeding, and multiple broken bones.
The couple is alleged to have subjected Miguel to ongoing abuse leading up to his death, with Nivalda admitting to one charge related to his death. Pirjani, a former chef and digger driver, testified in court that he deeply cared for his son, constantly seeking medical advice and expressing his love and concern for Miguel.
Emergency services responded to their residence in Wirral on the day Miguel went into cardiac arrest. Medical examination revealed extensive injuries on the baby, leading to the conclusion that Miguel had endured a series of deliberate and severe harm.
Pirjani shared details of his past, including his migration to the UK from Albania and meeting his wife in 2013. He denied allegations of violence towards Nivalda and refuted her claims of his aggressive behavior towards Miguel. Pirjani emphasized his active involvement in Miguel’s medical care and his immediate response when the baby showed signs of distress.
The prosecution presented contrasting accounts from Nivalda, portraying Pirjani as abusive, while Pirjani defended himself, suggesting that Miguel’s injuries might have been misconstrued. The court proceedings continue under the direction of Mr. Justice Baker, with both defendants denying the charges against them.
