Must read

Two individuals lost their lives in a tragic incident where an aircraft flipped during takeoff, landed on its wing, and burst into flames in front of shocked witnesses. Spectators at the scene reacted with screams and attempts to flee as the pilot struggled to control the light aircraft, resulting in it nearly flipping upside down before crashing onto the runway. The distressing event unfolded just before 10 am local time at Paramillo Aerodrome, an airport serving San Cristobal in the mountainous western region of Venezuela.

The deceased were identified as pilot Jose Antonio Bortone Terife, aged 50, and co-pilot Juan Maldonado, aged 47, with investigations initiated to determine the cause of the accident. While initial theories pointed towards a potential tire explosion, authorities will also examine the possibility of pilot error contributing to the tragedy.

The Piper Cheyenne 1 aircraft, reportedly connected to the Venezuelan government for logistical purposes, was completely destroyed by the ensuing fire. The National Institute of Civil Aviation of Venezuela confirmed that the aircraft, with registration YV1443, crashed during takeoff at 9:52 am local time on Wednesday, October 23, at Paramillo Airport in Tachira state.

In a statement, the Venezuelan civil aviation authority mentioned the immediate activation of accident response protocols and the deployment of the airport’s aeronautical fire brigade. Regrettably, both crew members on board lost their lives, prompting the activation of the Civil Aviation Accident Investigation Board to determine the accident’s causes.

EC Charter, listing Mr. Bortone as one of its pilots, praised his 30 years of experience and 10,300 hours of flight time, highlighting his family’s aviation background. The company described him as an exceptional pilot known for his dedication, professionalism, and profound commitment to the organization. Additionally, a tribute was paid to Mr. Bortone on the company’s Instagram page, honoring his memory and extending heartfelt condolences to his family.

Similarly, Gloria Santana paid tribute to the other victim, Juan Maldonado, as a great professional teacher passionate about his work. She expressed sorrow at the loss of a remarkable individual and offered condolences, acknowledging his positive impact and character. The aviation community mourns the loss of these two dedicated professionals.
