“Alan Titchmarsh: Japanese Maples Perfect for Small Gardens”

Must read

If you’re considering adding a tree to your garden, Alan Titchmarsh recommends Japanese Maples as an excellent choice, especially during autumn when their vibrant colors shine. These versatile and colorful trees are perfect for small urban gardens, as they remain compact in size even as some varieties can grow up to 30ft tall. Dwarf strains, topping out at three feet, are ideal for small patio gardens or planters.

During autumn, Japanese Maples display stunning foliage colors in deep reds and yellows. Alan explains on his gardening YouTube channel that the cold weather triggers the leaves to turn a lovely reddish hue, while the coral red stems provide color throughout the winter after the leaves have fallen.

Japanese Maples are not rapid growers, typically increasing in size by six to 12 inches annually, with some slower-growing types only gaining a few inches per year. These trees have minimally invasive roots, posing little threat to nearby structures.

While Japanese Maples dislike severe frosts, they are generally low-maintenance if sheltered from harsh sunlight and winds. Alan advises promptly pruning any dying branches to prevent further damage.

Planting a Japanese Maple can be done almost any time of year, but it is recommended to plant during the dormant season or in early spring or autumn for optimal growth. Choose a spot with dappled shade, water well after planting, and avoid overwatering. Smaller trees can thrive in containers for several years before needing repotting, and with proper care, Japanese Maples can live for decades, with some well-maintained specimens surviving for over a century.
