“NHS Urges Vulnerable Groups: Get Crucial Flu Vaccine Now”

Must read

The National Health Service (NHS) is urging specific vulnerable groups to arrange a crucial vaccination this month. This reminder is especially important for individuals born before a certain date, pregnant women, children, and others at risk.

In a recent announcement, the NHS highlighted that nearly 8 million people have already received their flu vaccine. Influenza can pose serious risks to high-risk groups like children, pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with chronic conditions. Eligible individuals can schedule their vaccination online, through their GP, pharmacy, or the NHS App.

Flu vaccines are designed to safeguard against potentially life-threatening influenza for certain demographics. The NHS administers these vaccinations annually to individuals at elevated risk of severe health complications.

According to a recent update from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), six specific groups became eligible to book their flu shots starting from September 1 this year, with an additional six groups becoming eligible from October 1.

Individuals who will reach 65 years of age by March 31, 2026, are also eligible for the NHS flu vaccine this winter if they were born on or before March 31, 1961.

Verification of eligibility for a flu shot can be done through the NHS app. These vaccinations are available at GP practices, select pharmacies, maternity clinics, and care facilities.

Healthcare or social care workers may be eligible to receive their flu vaccine at their workplace. It is generally safe to receive the flu vaccine alongside other vaccines such as COVID-19 and shingles vaccines.

Although the RSV vaccine is usually administered separately, healthcare providers may administer both vaccines if deemed necessary. Most individuals eligible for the flu vaccine can receive it, except those who have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or any vaccine component, particularly individuals with egg allergies.

As of October 1, the NHS had already sent out over 12 million flu jab invitations via email, with additional invitations distributed through the NHS App, text messages, and letters throughout the month. Eligible individuals do not need to wait for an invitation to book their vaccination.
