Israel Reinstates Gaza Ceasefire After Deadly Airstrikes

Must read

Israel’s military has announced the reinstatement of the Gaza ceasefire following intense overnight airstrikes that resulted in the deaths of at least 104 Palestinians, with nearly half of them being children.

The tragic event saw 46 children lose their lives in the onslaught, which was triggered by militants attacking Israeli troops and killing a soldier who also held US citizenship.

The abrupt breach of the October 10 ceasefire posed the most significant threat to sustained peace since a period of relative calm had settled over the Palestinian territory.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued the order after accusing Hamas of violating the ceasefire by releasing body parts that were identified as partial remains of a previously abducted individual.

The situation escalated with the fatal shooting of an Israeli soldier during an exchange of gunfire in Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza.

Reflecting on the unrest, Mirror Defence and Security Editor Chris Hughes described the scene as a precarious Gaza ceasefire where over 100 Palestinians lost their lives in retaliation for the killing of an Israeli soldier within the Strip.

Hamas demonstrated the ability to incite a forceful Israeli response in response to the shooting of Chief Sgt Yona Efraim Feldbaum, a father of five.

The militant group’s leverage dwindled as they released the remaining 20 hostages back to Israel. Despite denying involvement in the sniper attack, Hamas faced accusations of clandestinely including remains of a previously released hostage in the body-release arrangement.

Hamas aimed to create a rift between Israel and its US ally, potentially prompting US President Trump to rein in the Israeli Defense Forces after the devastating airstrikes. However, this strategy backfired as Sgt Feldbaum held dual Israel-US citizenship.

Trump’s staunch support of Israel’s actions is seen as a significant win for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who authorized the extensive airstrikes.

Netanyahu’s bold move solidifies his authority over the Gaza peace process, allowing him to respond with lethal force at the first sign of Hamas violating the agreement, even after causing significant casualties.

Despite the ruthless nature of these actions, Netanyahu effectively outmaneuvered Hamas, demonstrating strategic prowess. If Hamas was indeed behind the soldier’s shooting that triggered the recent violence, their plan seems to have backfired, with the US refraining from intervening heavily against Israel.

In this region of the Middle East, the ceasefire scenario involves significant casualties without escalating into full-scale war. Netanyahu insists on reserving the right to respond with overwhelming force to any disturbances within Gaza, emphasizing the fragility of the ceasefire.

Unfortunately, numerous Palestinian civilians have paid the ultimate price, and the ongoing question remains: what level of Israeli response would truly halt the ceasefire continuation?

Defining a disproportionate reaction, particularly in the eyes of US President Donald Trump, poses a challenge. In the upcoming period, Hamas is likely to test the limits of the ceasefire by provoking Israel, leading to further scrutiny of the ceasefire’s durability through subsequent responses.
