An acclaimed B&B and café in Alburgh, Norfolk, has shut down, dealing a severe blow to the local community. The owner, Sonya Resemblance, attributed the closure to the establishment’s challenging location, which led to a lack of foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, known for its gluten-free offerings, ceased operations after a successful two and a half years, catering to what Resemblance fondly referred to as “beautiful people.” This closure adds to the ongoing crisis facing pubs and hospitality businesses across Britain, with many establishments facing closure due to escalating costs and changing consumer behaviors.
The White Horse, a beloved pub in Beaconsfield, recently closed permanently, reflecting the broader struggles within the industry. Pub owners raised concerns about the industry’s viability, citing substantial cost increases that led to the closure of 300 pubs in the initial months of 2025.
Despite being recognized as one of the top 50 cafés at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before shutting down, the Dove Inn faced insurmountable challenges. Resemblance, who took over the inn in July 2023, offered a gluten-free menu that garnered praise for accommodating individuals with dietary restrictions.
Expressing gratitude to loyal customers, Resemblance stated that the business had created job opportunities and served as a vital social hub for mental well-being. However, she acknowledged the struggle to sustain the business at its current location, ultimately attributing the closure to this factor.
Prior to the announcement, the business had acknowledged the difficulties within the retail and hospitality sectors. Despite efforts from devoted patrons to save the establishment, Resemblance confirmed the closure on January 16, receiving an outpouring of supportive messages from the community.
Customers expressed sadness over the closure, reminiscing about the pleasant gatherings and exceptional food offered by the Dove Inn. The closure marks another casualty in the challenging landscape faced by businesses in the retail and hospitality sectors.
