NATO forces have successfully taken down an unidentified drone that was observed near a military base used by US troops in Estonia, in close proximity to Russia. The incident occurred at Camp Reedo, a US Army base located less than 30 miles from the Russian border. This event occurred amidst heightened tensions between Putin and the Baltic state due to the conflict in Ukraine.
Reports indicate that two drones were sighted in the area, with one being destroyed; however, it remains uncertain if US forces were directly involved in the interception. The occurrence, which transpired on October 17 but was only recently disclosed, has sparked calls for a stronger response to Russian activities in the region.
Estonian Defense Forces headquarters spokesperson, Liis Vaksmann, confirmed the detection of drones near the 2nd Infantry Brigade’s military base at 4:30 pm on October 17, with one drone being neutralized using an anti-drone rifle. Despite efforts by Estonian military and police forces, the downed drone has yet to be located.
Estonia, considered one of NATO’s most vulnerable members in the face of potential Russian aggression, also hosts British troops as part of a multinational effort to deter Russian provocations. The Reedo base accommodates the US Army’s 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, an armored reconnaissance unit. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized the importance of NATO being prepared to intercept and bring down unauthorized aircraft breaching sovereign airspace.
The recent incident coincided with Ukraine launching significant strikes on Russia, causing substantial damage to oil and petrochemical facilities. Various targets, including oil depots and refineries, were struck in different regions, resulting in petrol price hikes and supply shortages in Russia. The retaliatory actions were part of Ukraine’s ongoing campaign to disrupt Russian oil production facilities.
