The daughter of a woman who tragically died on a remote island after a cruise ship departed without her has spoken out about her grief. Suzanne Rees, 80, was found deceased on Lizard Island after the Coral Adventurer cruise ship left without her, leading to a search that ended in the discovery of her body in a secluded area.
Reports indicate that Ms. Rees had gone for a hike on the island where she sustained fatal injuries. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding her absence from the ship and allegations that a passenger count was not conducted before the vessel departed.
Katherine Rees, the daughter of the deceased, expressed disappointment in Coral Expeditions for what she perceived as a lack of care and responsibility. She highlighted the sequence of events leading to her mother’s death and emphasized the need for a thorough coroner’s inquiry to uncover possible negligence that could have prevented the tragedy.
The search for Ms. Rees was initiated after she failed to attend a scheduled dinner onboard. Her body was eventually located by a search helicopter the following day near a hiking trail, with indications suggesting a fall from a cliff or slope as the cause of death.
Authorities have classified the death as “non-suspicious” and confirmed that a coroner will investigate further. Coral Expeditions has pledged full cooperation with official inquiries and extended condolences to the Rees family. Regulatory bodies are also looking into the incident to ascertain why Ms. Rees was not properly monitored during the boarding process at Lizard Island.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority and workplace safety agencies are actively involved in determining the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
