Fire TV Stick users need to exercise caution when adding new apps to their devices due to a recent security issue. The popular tool “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, leaving room for a fraudulent copycat app that aims to scam users.
The problem arose when Downloader suddenly vanished from Amazon’s online marketplace over the weekend. For nearly ten years, Downloader has been a valuable tool for Fire TV owners, enabling them to search for and install apps not found on official platforms.
Despite its extensive user base, Downloader faced a temporary suspension after being flagged as a full web browser by Amazon following an update. Amazon prohibits third-party browsers on Fire TV devices, prompting the app’s removal.
The developer, Elias Saba, attributes the issue to a recent update that caused Downloader to be identified as a browser. Saba has released an update, version 2.0.2, that removes the browser registration in hopes of reinstating the app on the Appstore soon.
In the meantime, users are cautioned against a fake version of Downloader that attempts to deceive Fire TV owners by charging a weekly fee. Saba advises users not to install this fraudulent app and to report it to Amazon if encountered.
For users with the legitimate Downloader already installed, it is recommended not to delete it as reinstallation may not be possible until Amazon resolves the issue. Additionally, disabling Auto Offload in the device settings can prevent automatic removal of the app.
Pending Amazon’s approval of the fix, Downloader may make a return to Fire TV devices later in the week, but users are advised to stay vigilant.
