Israeli authorities have returned the bodies of 30 Palestinians following the handover of two hostages by Hamas militants in Gaza. The Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis confirmed receiving the bodies but did not disclose their condition or identities immediately.
This exchange of remains signifies progress in the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement, despite recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza that resulted in the deaths of over 100 Palestinians, mostly civilians. The airstrikes were in response to the killing of an Israel Defense Force soldier by a sniper and allegations that Hamas had returned body parts of a previously abducted hostage.
Before this recent handover, Israel had returned the bodies of 195 Palestinians to Gaza without specifying their identities. The origins of these bodies are unclear, whether they were killed in Israel during the October 7 attack, died in Israeli custody, or were recovered from Gaza during conflict.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that the returned remains were those of Sahar Baruch and Amiram Cooper, who were taken hostage during the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas. The ceasefire, in effect since October 10, aims to de-escalate the deadly conflict between Israel and Hamas, one of the most destructive conflicts in their history.
Hamas has now returned 17 hostages since the ceasefire began, with more to follow. The remaining fighters in the designated yellow zone in Gaza were given a deadline to evacuate or face Israeli strikes, signaling a push to enforce the ceasefire terms. The ceasefire was initiated after a brutal attack on Israel in October 2023 by Hamas-led militants, resulting in many casualties and hostages.
The ongoing war has seen significant casualties, with over 68,600 Palestinians in Gaza reportedly killed in Israeli military operations, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The accuracy of these figures has been contested by Israel, amidst accusations of genocide in Gaza by some international critics.
