“Mayor of Uruapan Assassinated at Day of the Dead Event”

Must read

The mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, 40, was fatally shot by two armed individuals during a daring attack at a public event. The incident occurred during the Day of the Dead festivities in the central square of the city, located approximately 251 miles west of Mexico City. Mayor Manzo, known for his strong stance against the violent drug cartels in Mexico, had previously expressed controversial views suggesting the use of force to combat criminal organizations in the region.

In the wake of his tragic death, statements made by Manzo prior to the attack indicated his awareness of the dangers he faced. He had emphasized the importance of not succumbing to fear despite the risks associated with his public position.

The late mayor’s outspoken approach to tackling cartel violence set him apart from mainstream political figures in Mexico. Despite his efforts, security consultant David Saucedo described Manzo as courageous but imprudent in his confrontations with the criminal networks, noting that he lacked the necessary resources for such a challenging task.

Following the assassination, President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the heinous act, offering her condolences to Manzo’s family and the community of Uruapan. The tragic event also garnered international attention, with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau expressing sympathy for the late mayor and his loved ones.

Within a day of his death, a funeral was held for Mayor Manzo, adhering to the customary swift burial practices observed in various countries, including those in Latin America and southern Europe.
