A tragic incident occurred in Lardos, a coastal village on the island of Rhodes, where a three-year-old British girl named Matilda passed away after falling into a hotel swimming pool while on holiday in Greece. The young girl had been left unattended and was found unconscious at the bottom of the pool, leading to her hospitalization in critical condition. Despite efforts by medical professionals, she succumbed to her injuries after 12 days of treatment in hospitals in Rhodes, Crete, and finally in her home country of England.
The child’s uncle, who was responsible for supervising her at the time of the incident, allegedly left her alone for approximately 10 minutes. A British doctor present at the scene performed CPR before Matilda was rushed to the General Hospital of Rhodes and later transferred to Crete and England for further medical care. Tragically, she did not survive her ordeal.
Following the incident, the uncle and a 54-year-old manager of a travel agency associated with the hotel have been arrested by authorities, along with the 57-year-old hotel owner and the hotel’s director, who are all facing charges related to the child’s death. An investigation revealed inadequate safety measures at the hotel, including the absence of a lifeguard, rescue equipment, and a designated supervisor at the pool where the incident occurred.
Legal representatives for the uncle and the hotel manager have offered differing perspectives on the events leading to the tragedy. The uncle’s lawyer claims his client was not in close proximity to the child at the time, while the hotel manager’s lawyer argues that the pool did not legally require a lifeguard due to its size.
Law enforcement officials are examining CCTV footage to better understand the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the investigation ongoing. A witness who was at the hotel noticed the child in distress and promptly intervened, alerting others to the situation.
Medical professionals had initially informed the family that the child’s brain injury was irreversible, describing her as “brain dead” due to prolonged submersion in the water. Despite the efforts to save her life, Matilda tragically could not be revived.
