The racing community is saddened by the passing of apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes, who has tragically died at 19 years old. The Injured Jockeys’ Fund and Professional Jockeys Association issued a joint statement revealing the heartbreaking news on Thursday.

Tommie Jakes, a licensed apprentice jockey, passed away at his residence near Newmarket. Described as a beloved son, brother, and a valued member of George Boughey’s racing squad, his family has requested privacy during this difficult period.

Having recently ridden at Nottingham, Jakes was scheduled to ride two horses at Chelmsford under trainer Ismail Mohammed. With 59 wins from 519 appearances since 2023, Jakes was considered one of the most promising young talents in the racing community. His first triumph as an apprentice was aboard Suzi’s Connoisseur at Lingfield in March of the same year.

Following his father’s footsteps into the racing world, Jakes had a notable victory on Two The Manor Born at Warwick during his time on the pony racing circuit. His final win was on Fouroneohfever at Catterick with Boughey’s horse.

Acknowledging Jakes’ talent and potential, the British Horseracing Authority expressed deep sorrow over his passing. Racing support services are available for those affected, with marks of respect planned at racecourses in the coming days.

George Boughey’s team expressed their profound sadness over Jakes’ untimely death, highlighting his talent, kindness, and hard work. The IJF and PJA shared helplines for support, emphasizing the availability of assistance for those in need.
