MPs are now pressing for explanations regarding Prince Andrew’s rent-free arrangement at Royal Lodge in light of the “serious and troubling allegations” against him. The disgraced royal is under scrutiny for his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and the highly favorable rent agreement he has had with the Crown Estate for over two decades.
The influential Parliamentary watchdog, known as the ‘queen of select committees,’ has called on the Treasury and Crown Estate to clarify the terms of Andrew’s lucrative lease. Concerns have been raised about potential financial implications for taxpayers and whether the Crown Estate is fulfilling its duty to maximize returns from its properties for public benefit.
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), responsible for overseeing public spending efficiency, has formally requested an update on the status and rationale behind the lease for the opulent Royal Lodge. The PAC chairman emphasized the public interest in ensuring transparency and value for money, especially given recent developments and Prince Andrew’s changing roles and responsibilities.
Amid escalating pressure on the monarchy to address the Prince’s situation, discussions are reportedly underway for Andrew to vacate Royal Lodge after residing there for more than two decades. Reports suggest a potential agreement for Andrew and his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, to move to Frogmore Cottage and Adelaide Cottage in exchange for leaving the current property.
The PAC aims to review responses from the Crown Estate and Treasury by November 28 before deciding on further actions. Prince Andrew, who recently renounced his Duke of York title following allegations of sexual misconduct, continues to deny all accusations against him despite ongoing public scrutiny.
