“Which? Report: Smaller Mobile Networks Outperform Big Four”

Must read

A recent report by consumer group Which? revealed that despite the popularity of major mobile networks like EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, they are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to smaller competitors. After surveying over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, the study found that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.

The report aimed to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations. The results highlighted that the traditional “Big Four” networks are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of customer satisfaction. Leading the rankings were Talkmobile, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY.

Among the major providers, EE performed the best, ranking ninth. In contrast, O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks. Price was a significant factor, with customers on the Big Four paying an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, while users of smaller networks paid just £9.

Despite the lower prices of smaller providers, the report noted that coverage quality was not compromised. Many smaller networks utilize the infrastructure of major carriers, allowing customers to access similar signal and service quality without the premium prices associated with well-known brands. Switching between networks was also highlighted as a straightforward process, with some users able to switch in as little as 10 minutes.

One Which? member shared their experience of leaving O2 due to a price increase, opting for a more affordable plan with SMARTY and saving around £200 annually. Natalie Hitchins, Which? Head of Home Products and Services, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outshine larger firms in customer service and affordability, offering households certainty in a challenging economic climate.

The report’s full rankings showcased Talkmobile at the top with 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile at 81%, Giffgaff and SMARTY at 79%, and Voxi at 79%. The scores for other providers ranged from 77% to 65%.
