In the early hours of the morning, a criminal threatened a baby by holding a piece of broken glass to its head during a carjacking incident in Belfast city center.
The child was seated in the back of the car with its mother while the father, who was driving, stepped out of the vehicle to make a delivery around 3.50 am. Two men approached the car on foot, with one entering the driver’s seat and driving off with the woman and child still inside.
Shortly after driving away, the man turned and menaced the baby by holding what appeared to be a broken bottle or glass to its head. He demanded the woman to exit the car, and once she and the baby were out, he fled in the vehicle. The abandoned car was later discovered on a nearby residential street, approximately a mile from the carjacking site.
Describing the event as “absolutely shocking” and “extremely distressing,” police have urged anyone with information or witnesses to come forward. Detective Sergeant McVeagh stated that the delivery driver left his white Vauxhall Agila in Donegall Place, with his partner and baby in the back, when the car was stolen.
The second man present at the scene attempted to prevent the car theft but was unsuccessful. The criminal then drove towards City Hall and Chichester Street after threatening the baby and demanding the woman to exit the vehicle. Fortunately, the victims were left shaken but physically unharmed. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
