“UK Bid Farewell to Copper Landlines, Shifts to Digital Voice”

Must read

In a significant move, the UK is bidding farewell to traditional copper landlines hanging above its streets. The shift to modern “Digital Voice” services is scheduled for January 2027, signaling the end of the outdated copper-wire phone network.

Homes will soon transition to making calls through their broadband connections. This shift marks one of the most substantial changes in UK communication history. To expedite the move away from aging infrastructure, BT’s Openreach network is implementing its “Stop Sell” initiative.

Under this program, major providers like BT, Sky, Plusnet, and TalkTalk will no longer offer new copper-based broadband and phone services in affected regions. The rollout of Stop Sell notifications has already begun in various parts of the UK. Openreach has disclosed an additional expansion affecting 238 exchange locations and approximately 1.69 million premises.

After the implementation of these changes, customers seeking upgrades or new services will need to switch to full fiber broadband and digital phone services instead of relying on the legacy copper network. Openreach clarified that the Stop Sell program is activated when a majority (75%) of premises connected to a specific exchange can access ultra-fast Full Fiber services.

By early June, the Stop Sell rules will be enforced across 1,432 exchanges nationwide, impacting around 14.2 million properties. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized the importance of the Stop Sell initiative in driving the UK towards a modern full fiber future.

The focus is on transitioning people to newer, future-proof technologies as copper’s capability diminishes. This transition not only benefits customers and providers by migrating to faster and more reliable digital infrastructure but also streamlines the maintenance process and reduces costs ahead of the impending shutdown of the legacy copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in less than eight months.

Digital Voice, BT’s advanced home phone service, leverages broadband technology to offer enhanced features like Multi Call, three-way calling, and call diversion to mobile phones. Upgrading to Digital Voice should not disrupt how households use their phones, as the service cost is inclusive in the broadband package without any additional charges.
