Royal Mail Warns of Service Delays in 100+ UK Postcodes

Must read

Royal Mail has issued a caution regarding potential delays in services affecting more than 100 UK postcodes. The postal service identified 38 delivery offices that may face disruptions due to inclement weather and higher-than-usual sick leave among workers. These offices collectively serve approximately 100 postcodes nationwide.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail mentioned that adverse weather conditions, including storms named Goretti, Ingrid, and Chandra in January, coupled with increased sick leave, have caused temporary disruptions to certain delivery routes. The company reassured customers that the majority of mail is being delivered on schedule, recognizing the frustration when mail fails to arrive promptly.

In response to delays on affected routes, Royal Mail pledged to deploy additional support to expedite the restoration of deliveries. Recent reports by the BBC highlighted instances where letters were held in delivery offices for extended periods, with some postal workers anonymously disclosing that packages were prioritized over letters in certain depots.

Royal Mail attributed the rise in parcel deliveries to the growth of online shopping, while the volume of addressed letters in its network has been declining. Serving nearly two million postcodes, Royal Mail is committed to delivering mail six days a week, aiming for punctual delivery of both letters and parcels.

Last year, the regulator Ofcom authorized Royal Mail to discontinue second-class letter deliveries on Saturdays and transition to alternate weekday services. Although this change was piloted in 35 delivery offices, nationwide expansion to all 1,200 sites has been delayed due to unresolved negotiations with the Communication Workers Union.
