“1.5 Million UK Households Receive Cold Weather Payments”

Must read

Nearly 1.5 million households in England and Wales have already been granted cold weather payments this winter, as confirmed by the government. These payments of £25 are issued when the average temperature in a specific postcode area is at or expected to drop below zero degrees Celsius for seven consecutive days. The recent freezing weather in early 2026 has led to additional payments to eligible households.

The trigger for these payments was temperatures falling below zero at over 30 Met Office weather stations nationwide. Last winter, approximately 1.4 million cold weather payments were distributed. The Department for Work and Pensions has disclosed that over £35 million has been disbursed to vulnerable households in England and Wales this winter, within the scheme period of November 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.

Qualifying for Cold Weather Payments is typically linked to receiving Pension Credit. Additionally, individuals on Universal Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Support for Mortgage Interest may be eligible based on various criteria such as employment status, health conditions, disabilities, or caregiving responsibilities for young or disabled children.

While Cold Weather Payments are not available in Scotland, residents may qualify for an annual Winter Heating Payment instead. Pat McFadden, the Pensions Secretary, emphasized the importance of this support for vulnerable households during temperature drops. He highlighted that along with other measures like a higher National Living Wage, energy bill reductions, and Winter Fuel Payments for pensioners, these initiatives are significantly aiding households nationwide.

Low-income pensioners are encouraged to apply for Pension Credit, which not only provides financial assistance but also grants access to other benefits such as housing support, NHS dental treatment, council tax discounts, help with energy expenses, and a free TV license for individuals over 75. Despite this, statistics from 2023/24 reveal that a considerable number of eligible pensioners are missing out on Pension Credit, resulting in lost financial support. The charity Age UK stresses the importance of ensuring that vital support reaches those in need, especially during cold weather periods.

Morgan Vine, director of policy and influencing at Independent Age, emphasized the importance of Cold Weather Payments for older individuals on low incomes. She praised the UK Government’s £35 million investment to aid those struggling to heat their homes and expressed a commitment to collaborating with the government to guarantee that elderly individuals with limited incomes receive the necessary financial assistance.
