An 18-year-old nursery worker, Thomas Waller, remained silent and repeatedly answered “no comment” when questioned by police regarding the rape and sexual abuse of children as young as three. Waller, who was employed at the nursery during the summer months, was entrusted with tasks such as assisting children in the restroom and aiding them with changing clothes. Shortly after commencing his duties, Waller deceitfully exploited his position to gain the trust of two young boys, ultimately subjecting them to heinous acts of sexual abuse.
Following disclosures made by the children to their parents, Waller was apprehended and subsequently found guilty of rape, inciting sexual activity, and possession of indecent images, resulting in a 10-year prison sentence. During his police interrogation, Waller maintained a stoic demeanor and declined to provide any information, despite the presence of DNA evidence linking him to the crime. Testimony from nursery staff further corroborated his suspicious behavior, including being alone with one of the boys in the restroom.
Investigators discovered incriminating evidence on Waller’s phone, including indecent images of another child, adding to the gravity of his offenses. Throughout the interrogation, Waller persistently evaded questions and responded with “no comment,” refusing to acknowledge any wrongdoing. The judge, in delivering the sentence, expressed deep sorrow for the victims’ families who now bear the burden of Waller’s despicable actions.
In a poignant victim impact statement, the father of one of the children described the harrowing effects on his son, lamenting the loss of innocence and the lasting trauma inflicted upon him. The court sentenced Waller to 15 years in a young offender institution, with a requirement to serve 10 years in detention and five on license, in a bid to prevent any future harm.
