After approximately six months of retirement, Marc-Antoine Dequoy has returned to the football arena, vying for a championship. The 31-year-old safety, previously with the Montreal Alouettes for five seasons, is now part of the Canadian men’s team competing at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world flag football championship in Duesseldorf, Germany.
Dequoy decided to retire from the CFL in February due to physical limitations that would prevent him from fulfilling the demands of a full CFL season. However, he felt the urge to return to the competitive scene and seized the opportunity to join the flag football team after some deliberation and encouragement from Canadian head coach Paul LaPolice.
Despite his successful CFL career, including two Grey Cup appearances and one win in 2023, Dequoy found flag football to be a unique challenge. The game is played on a smaller field with different rules, requiring players to adjust their techniques and mindset. Dequoy admitted that breaking old habits, such as refraining from physical contact and mastering the art of flag-grabbing, was a learning curve for him.
Canada faced a minor setback in the tournament as Nigeria withdrew its teams due to visa issues, resulting in schedule adjustments for the remaining teams. Canada is set to compete against Austria and Japan in the preliminary rounds, aiming to secure a top-two finish to qualify for the Olympics.
Dequoy expressed his excitement at the prospect of Olympic qualification through flag football, emphasizing the significance of the opportunity to represent Canada on the world stage.
