The mayor of The Pas has decided to step down from his position shortly before the upcoming local election and has stated that he will not seek re-election this fall. Andre Murphy, who was first elected as mayor of the northern Manitoba town in 2022, made the announcement online on Monday evening, citing his immediate resignation.
Confirming his resignation to CBC News, Murphy stated that he will not be running for re-election, leaving the town without a mayor for the next nine weeks until the municipal elections take place on October 28. There will be no mayoral byelection before that date, and Deputy Mayor Carrie Atkinson will assume most of the day-to-day responsibilities until the election.
According to Murphy, he and his family reached the decision last week, and he informed the council on Monday. Initially considering running for another four-year term, he ultimately decided against it over the summer, expressing his commitment to fully engaging in any role he undertakes.
Expressing his desire to spend more time with his family, including children and grandchildren residing in eastern Canada, Murphy emphasized his strong connection to The Pas, where he has lived for over 50 years. Despite stepping down, he expressed confidence in the town’s future and highlighted the positive developments achieved during his tenure.
Reflecting on his time as mayor, Murphy shared his proudest accomplishments, such as fostering collaboration with neighboring communities, securing grants for local projects, and enhancing recreational and infrastructural facilities. He expressed optimism about the town’s trajectory under the existing council and administration, emphasizing the potential for growth and positive changes in northern Manitoba.
