World No. 1 men’s tennis player, Jannik Sinner, has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open due to a knee injury. Sinner, who last played during his consecutive Wimbledon triumphs, also opted out of the National Bank Open in Montreal last week. The 24-year-old Sinner, boasting five Grand Slam victories, only needs the French Open title to complete his career Grand Slam.
In a statement released by tournament officials, Sinner revealed, “After consultations with my medical team, I regret to announce my withdrawal from the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati. Despite intensive efforts with my doctors, my right knee remains a concern, and I acknowledge that I am not yet fit to compete. I’m disheartened to miss Cincinnati but look forward to returning next year and am now focusing on preparing for the U.S. Open.”
This decision by Sinner follows a similar move by Carlos Alcaraz, who recently withdrew from the Cincinnati tournament citing a persistent wrist injury. Consequently, fans at Cincinnati will miss out on watching the top two players when men’s singles action commences.
Notably, Sinner clinched the Cincinnati title two years ago, using it as a stepping stone to his subsequent U.S. Open victory. However, his reign was cut short last year by Alcaraz, who defeated him in the U.S. Open final. The 23-year-old Spanish player is gearing up to defend his title as the main draw of the tournament kicks off on August 30.
