A Food Basics store will soon replace a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys area this autumn, resulting in job losses for numerous employees. Metro Inc. stated that the decision to convert the store to Food Basics was made to better align with the community’s needs and market demands. The closure announcement in May came as a surprise to workers, with the regional manager citing financial pressures as the reason, including increased rent and profitability concerns. Despite inquiries about rent costs, Metro emphasized that the change was primarily driven by local market conditions.
The Southgate Metro location employed 72 individuals who, according to the company’s collective agreement, do not have the option to transfer to other Metro stores. However, affected workers are encouraged to apply for positions at the new Food Basics store, where a minimum number of former Southgate Metro employees will be hired based on the agreement terms. The transition to Food Basics poses challenges for some employees, like meat cutter Justin Braganza, who may not find equivalent roles at the new store due to differing job requirements.
Customers and employees alike expressed disappointment and concern about the abrupt change. The United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiated enhanced options for affected members, including severance benefits and job opportunities at Food Basics. Legal experts highlighted potential grievances that unions can file regarding layoffs due to corporate rebranding, emphasizing the importance of settlements to resolve disputes swiftly. Despite uncertainties and limited rights for workers in such situations, affected employees like Braganza lament the loss of workplace relationships and the impending changes ahead.
