“Royal Canadian Legion Celebrates 100 Years, Attracting Younger Members”

Must read

At 100 years old, the Royal Canadian Legion is actively seeking to engage a younger demographic, as witnessed at the Billy Bishop Legion in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighborhood. The Legion, traditionally frequented by veterans, is now attracting new members like Hannah, a 37-year-old yoga enthusiast who finds a sense of community and connection among the military memorabilia.

In an effort to diversify its membership base, Legions nationwide are offering innovative events, affordable dining options, and a welcoming atmosphere. This year, in celebration of its centenary, the Royal Canadian Legion is providing free membership to first-time joiners, regardless of military background.

Despite its historical focus on veteran support and community events, the Legion is evolving to appeal to a broader audience. With over 100,000 new members in 2026, the organization aims to maintain its core values while embracing growth and new ideas.

While some Legions have faced closures due to financial challenges, branches like the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, have successfully adapted by offering affordable meals and entertainment to the public. Looking ahead, the Bala Legion is planning to redevelop its facility to include 110 rental units to ensure long-term sustainability.

President Dennis Mills emphasizes the importance of attracting fresh faces to ensure the Legion’s continued success and vibrancy within the community. As the organization evolves, it seeks to engage Canadians from all walks of life in its commitment to support veterans and foster a sense of belonging.
