German authorities are currently investigating a drone loaded with explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport. In response, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated that Moscow will intensify its retaliation against countries supporting Ukraine. Lavrov mentioned in an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, that they are already taking harsher measures to disrupt support for Kyiv.
The drone, carrying an unidentified explosive device, was found by an airport employee in the security area of the cargo operations zone near the south runway of Leipzig airport, which is considered critical infrastructure. Leipzig serves as a strategic NATO airport for transporting armaments, ammunition, weapons, and other military supplies to Ukraine via flights operated by Ukrainian cargo companies.
The presence of the drone next to a Ukrainian cargo plane represents a heightened threat level for Germany, according to the country’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt. He stated that the incident appears to be part of a sophisticated hybrid threat scenario and not the work of amateurs.
While German authorities are investigating the situation and have not disclosed the drone’s origin, U.S. intelligence officials informed the Wall Street Journal that intelligence reports suggest the drone likely belonged to the Russian government. Berlin is approaching the matter cautiously, enhancing anti-drone capabilities while refraining from premature attributions.
Dobrindt highlighted that Russia is employing various tactics, including drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations across Europe, especially in the lead-up to regional elections in Germany. He emphasized the continuous threat Germany faces from hybrid warfare activities orchestrated by foreign powers seeking to destabilize the country.
Recent incidents, such as a foiled Russian plot to assassinate the CEO of a German defense contractor and the arrest of a suspected Russian spy gathering intelligence on Berlin’s military support for Ukraine, underscore the persistent challenges posed by foreign interference. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russia’s interference in Germany through online campaigns, aiming to exploit tensions within NATO member countries and Ukraine.
Dobrindt noted the dissemination of disinformation and influence attempts targeting German politics and society, particularly during regional elections. Hans-Jakob Schindler, from the Counter Extremism Project, described the drone incident in Leipzig as an aggressive escalation of Russia’s interference tactics, raising concerns about the boundary between defense measures and direct conflict.
Schindler emphasized the need to establish clear boundaries with Russia to prevent further escalations into conventional attacks. Lavrov’s recent statements are viewed as a departure from Russia’s previous denials of interference in Western countries, signaling a more aggressive approach towards Europe and NATO.
