“Former Bioware Team Launches Studio Reset in Edmonton”

Must read

A new independent game development studio, Studio Reset, has emerged in Edmonton with a team of three members who previously collaborated at renowned game companies like Bioware. Creative director Kaelin Lavallee, who departed Bioware in 2015, joined forces with Kris Schoneberg and Francis Lacuna to establish Studio Reset earlier this year, aiming to explore the creative and production aspects of game development.

Similar to other independent Canadian game creators like Soft Rains and Peculiar Path, Studio Reset represents a trend where experienced developers from major studios venture into independent projects. While the risks are substantial in the competitive video game industry flooded with numerous releases annually, smaller teams see this move as an opportunity to unleash their creativity compared to risk-averse AAA-level studios.

Studio Reset’s debut game, “The Eventide,” is a supernatural mystery set in a “neon-noir” Canadian environment inspired by “The X-Files” and narrative-driven puzzle games like “Case of the Golden Idol.” Players will select investigators from a diverse character pool to unravel unsolved cases, each investigator offering distinct perspectives on the mysteries, compelling players to piece together the truth.

According to Paul Fogolin, president of the Entertainment Software Association of Canada, the symbiotic relationship between AAA and indie studios contributes to a more robust and innovative gaming industry. These independent ventures, such as Red Barrels founded by Philippe Morin, emphasize hands-on game development and creative content creation, deviating from the corporate structure of larger studios.

The gaming landscape has seen a shift in risk calculations, with job losses affecting the industry in recent years. As major studios face uncertainties like layoffs and strategic shifts post-acquisition, independent studios like Studio Reset face challenges in marketing and visibility without the backing of multimillion-dollar campaigns. Despite the competitive market with thousands of game releases annually, success for Studio Reset means sustaining their business by catering to a niche audience and creating engaging games.
