“Williams Sisters Reunite for U.S. Open Doubles”

Must read

Serena and Venus Williams have joined forces once again for the upcoming U.S. Open tennis tournament. The duo secured a wild card entry on Wednesday for the doubles competition, a title they have clinched twice in the past.

Serena Williams made a comeback to professional tennis earlier this year following a four-year hiatus. The sisters were initially slated to compete together at Wimbledon, but Serena had to withdraw due to a knee injury sustained during a singles match. Their recent appearance at the Cincinnati Open ended with an early exit in the first round.

Having claimed the U.S. Open doubles title in 1999 and 2009, the Williams sisters boast a commendable record of 27 wins and 7 losses across nine appearances. Their last outing at the tournament was in 2022, where they were eliminated in the opening round, a match many believed would be Serena’s final appearance at Flushing Meadows.

During this year’s U.S. Open, Serena, aged 44, partnered with Carlos Alcaraz for mixed doubles, securing a victory before bowing out in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Venus, aged 46, is gearing up for the women’s singles event.

The formidable sibling duo has a remarkable history, having clinched 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. They also held the top spot in the women’s doubles rankings for an impressive eight-week period.

Although Serena opted out of the singles competition at the U.S. Open, where she has triumphed with six Grand Slam singles titles, she decided to participate in both doubles events after feeling prepared to do so.

Their first U.S. Open doubles triumph coincided with Serena’s maiden singles championship at the tournament. The peak of their partnership was evident about a decade later, marked by victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009, followed by another win at Flushing Meadows the same year. They continued their winning streak by securing the Australian Open and French Open titles in 2010, holding all four major trophies simultaneously.

The women’s doubles tournament at the U.S. Open is scheduled to kick off on September 3.
