American Family Finds Safety and Relief Abroad

Must read

An American family shared their daily sense of relief now that they are no longer concerned about their children’s safety at school after making a significant decision to move overseas. Clara Hogan, along with her husband Brian Hogan Stewart and their two daughters, made the move to Bologna, Italy, in August 2024. The family had long harbored the dream of living abroad, and escalating political tensions and living expenses in California prompted their relocation. Brian’s acceptance into a prestigious MBA program in Italy provided the perfect opportunity for them to make a fresh start.

Having sold their house, parted with most of their possessions, and embraced a new life on the other side of the world, Clara and Brian, both aged 36, now experience a profound sense of relief each morning as they send their six-year-old to primary school and their three-year-old to kindergarten. Clara, a content strategist from Iowa, expressed mixed emotions, feeling relief when her daughter goes to school but also experiencing grief as she thinks about friends back in the States who worry about their children’s safety.

Financial struggles in San Pablo, California, coupled with the looming possibility of Donald Trump seeking reelection, further incentivized the family to seek a change. When Brian secured admission to an MBA program specializing in Food and Wine in Bologna, they saw it as a perfect opportunity to make the move. Despite the rapid and overwhelming transition to Italy, Clara noted a significant growth in community support compared to their previous life in California.

As they settled into their new Italian lifestyle, Clara noticed stark differences in school safety measures compared to the United States. The family also experienced financial benefits from the move, saving significantly on rent, daycare, and grocery costs. While uncertain about their return to the US, Clara and Brian are finding a sense of tranquility in Italy that they had not experienced before.

Although they miss certain aspects of life in the US, such as family and familiar comforts, the family appreciates the peace and safety they have found in Italy. Clara emphasized the importance of knowing her daughter is secure at school, a feeling she values greatly amidst the uncertainties in their homeland.
