A critical situation has been announced at an NHS hospital due to an ongoing problem. Arrowe Park Hospital, a part of Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, had to halt elective procedures recently while addressing the issue. The trust has responded by purchasing new instruments and borrowing equipment from nearby NHS facilities.
According to an internal communication obtained by the Liverpool Echo, the trust is reaching out to other NHS trusts in the region for assistance in handling the disruption. Patients were redirected to Aintree Hospital and the Countess of Chester Hospital during this period.
An internal memo sent to staff at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust highlighted the ongoing issue in the Sterile Service Department affecting surgical instruments. The trust emphasized patient safety as the top priority, leading to the temporary suspension of elective procedures. As of yesterday, a critical incident was declared, and the trust has established command and control measures to manage the situation.
To minimize the impact on patients, the hospital has acquired additional surgical instruments and is collaborating with regional partners to secure more supplies.
The incident has sparked concerns among patients and their families. A patient expressed worry about surgeries being delayed due to the hospital’s lack of safe and sterile equipment. The hospital spokesperson reiterated that patient safety remains paramount and explained the decision to declare a Critical Incident due to unresolved issues affecting surgical instruments in the Sterile Services Department. The trust is working diligently to manage the situation and seeking support from other trusts to mitigate any patient impact.
