Must read

The Powerlist 2026 has unveiled the most influential Black figures in the UK, acknowledging individuals of African, African Caribbean, and African American descent who wield considerable influence in the country.

Securing the top spot is Afua Kyei, the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director of the Bank of England. Kyei, a prominent finance leader in the UK, manages the financial governance of the Bank’s £1 trillion balance sheet, spearheads funding reforms, and oversees critical national infrastructure upgrades for Payments. She is also a staunch advocate for diversity and climate disclosure.

Expressing her gratitude, Kyei stated, “Being ranked Number One on the Powerlist in its 20th year is a tremendous honor. It is not just a personal achievement but a symbol of representation, visibility, and opportunity. I am especially thrilled that someone from the public sector and financial services is being acknowledged in this manner.”

She added, “Seeing oneself mirrored in spaces where one might not have imagined belonging can reshape perceptions of what is attainable. I aspire that my journey inspires others to pursue their aspirations and believe they can reach the pinnacle of success.”

The Powerlist has served as a guiding light for two decades, and being part of that legacy is a source of pride for Kyei.

In the second spot is Ian Wright, a former England and Arsenal footballer who has transitioned into a pundit and advocate for equality in sports. Alongside Kyei and Wright in the top 10 are notable personalities like Dame Pat McGrath, a renowned makeup artist and founder of the billion-pound brand Pat McGrath Labs.

Other distinguished individuals in the top 10 include entrepreneur and Dragon’s Den investor Steven Bartlett, actor and philanthropist Idris Elba OBE, Emma Grede, CEO and Co-Founder of Good American, Founding Partner of SKIMS, and Ije Nwokorie, Chief Executive Officer of Dr Martens.

The 20th anniversary of the Powerlist celebrates leaders and trailblazers who have shattered barriers, redefined success, and inspired future generations. The honorees will be feted at the Powerlist 2026 and Celebration of Black Excellence Awards at The Grosvenor House Hotel in London, hosted by Jeanette Kwakye MBE and Tim Campbell MBE.

Michael Eboda, CEO of Powerful Media Ltd, remarked, “Since its inception in 2006, the Powerlist aimed to showcase role models whose achievements could motivate others. The impact over the past two decades has surpassed our expectations, fostering visibility, altering perceptions, and showing young Black individuals that their potential is limitless. Having Afua Kyei at Number 1 on this 20th anniversary underscores the leadership, resilience, and vision that the Powerlist was created to honor.”
