“Beware: Unqualified Instructors Risk Learner Drivers”

Must read

Learner drivers face potential risks when taking lessons from unqualified instructors, as highlighted by recent crackdowns carried out by The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Certified driving instructors undergo rigorous training and assessments to ensure they are qualified to teach driving safely and legally. The DVSA is actively investigating cases of illegal driving instruction to protect learners from scams and unsafe practices.

The DVSA is conducting targeted operations to identify and penalize illegal instructors and unsafe vehicles, with severe fines, prison sentences, and criminal fraud convictions being potential consequences. More than 150 learner vehicles have been inspected, and three suspected illegal instructors are currently under investigation. The DVSA encourages the public to report any information that could help identify illegal instructors.

It is essential for learners to verify that their driving instructor is either a qualified and approved instructor or a trainee with the appropriate badge displayed on their windscreen. A green badge indicates a qualified instructor, while a pink badge signifies a trainee. Failure to display the required badge may indicate an unqualified instructor conducting lessons illegally.

The DVSA is working on a streamlined form to facilitate the reporting of potentially illegal instructors, although it is not yet operational. Individuals can still report suspected illegal instructors directly to the DVSA by contacting them via email or phone. Instructors caught conducting illegal driving lessons may face serious repercussions.
