A British tourist in Turkey, who had come for breast enhancement surgery, made a plea on social media for prayers following a frightening earthquake. Identified as Courtney on TikTok with the username @keepingupwithcourts, she shared a video after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Balikesir region, expressing her shock and fear over the thunder and lightning accompanying the tremor.
Reports indicated that buildings collapsed in Sindirgi, resulting in numerous injuries as panic spread through the area. The quake, with a magnitude of 6.2, was felt as far as Istanbul, over 200 miles away. Courtney, uncertain about the earthquake’s intensity, recounted her friend’s mention of a previous deadly 6.1 magnitude quake that caused fatalities and destruction.
In her video, Courtney highlighted the severe weather conditions that followed the quake, preventing them from venturing outside due to strong winds, rain, thunder, and lightning. She pleaded for safety, emphasizing the importance of surviving the ordeal given the risks involved, especially after spending money on surgery and having a child waiting at home.
The earthquake struck at 1.048pm local time (7.48pm GMT) at a depth of 5.99km (3.72 miles), leading to aftershocks and structural damage. Official sources confirmed 22 injuries from panic-related incidents, with unoccupied buildings and shops collapsing in Sindirgi. Despite the chaos, no loss of life was reported, although assessments were ongoing.
Residents sought refuge in mosques, schools, and sports halls due to the stormy conditions, fearing further building collapses. Turkey’s susceptibility to earthquakes, being situated on significant fault lines, has left its population accustomed to such seismic events, with the recent fatal quake in August serving as a reminder of the country’s vulnerability.
