If you notice discolored stains in your toilet, such as brown, black, or green marks, it is likely due to limescale buildup caused by hard water containing minerals like calcium and magnesium. These deposits are left behind when the water evaporates, leading to unsightly staining.
Removing limescale from toilet bowls typically involves using white vinegar, bleach, baking soda, or specialized cleaning products. However, Andrea Philips, a member of Airtasker’s lifestyle editorial team, has shared a unique method to tackle stubborn stains using cola.
Cola’s high acidity makes it effective for tasks like removing limescale from kettles, cleaning car windscreens, and eliminating mold and limescale from tile grout. With a pH level of 2.8, cola is comparable to vinegar and lemon juice in terms of acidity. Philips recommends pouring cola around the inside of the toilet bowl and allowing it to sit for about an hour before flushing and using a toilet brush to clean.
For thicker limescale buildup, leaving the cola overnight can enhance its effectiveness. It is important to ensure the cola covers the inner rim of the toilet bowl as well, as limescale tends to accumulate in that area.
A representative from Plumbworld suggests using cola as a cost-effective limescale removal method, emphasizing the importance of using regular cola instead of diet versions due to their lower phosphoric acid content essential for dissolving limescale. Heating the cola slightly before use can also improve its efficacy on tough deposits.
However, it is advised not to use cola in coffee machines for limescale removal, as it may leave a sticky residue if not rinsed thoroughly.
