“Expert Review: Why the MINI Clubman Cooper S Stands Out”

Must read

I have been reviewing cars for more than two years, sharing my insights on new vehicles and their value for money. Throughout 2020, one constant in my life has been my cherished MINI Clubman Cooper.

Last year, when I was in need of a new car, I embarked on a year-long journey to find the ideal replacement. Surprisingly, I concluded that the best choice was a pre-owned MINI Clubman Cooper S.

You may be puzzled as to why, after an extensive search, I ended up selecting a similar model. It is important to highlight that I am not alone in praising MINI for their exceptional craftsmanship.

An expert from AutoTrader recently acknowledged that the Mini Cooper’s sibling, the Clubman, stands out among used car options. According to Richard Dredge, the MINI offers unrivaled charm, efficient engines, engaging dynamics, and cost-effectiveness compared to its competitors.

While my new car is an estate rather than a hatchback, they share many components as they are manufactured by the same company in the same plant. Therefore, my choice of another MINI Clubman is justified. But why did I specifically opt for this model and how has it performed?

Let’s delve into the specifications. The 2017 Cooper S I now own is equipped with a 2.0 twin-turbo four-cylinder engine delivering 189bhp, a significant upgrade from the 134bhp generated by the turbocharged 1.5 three-cylinder engine in the Cooper.

Additionally, the torque has been enhanced from 162 lb ft in the Cooper to 206lbft in the Cooper S. Unlike my previous front-wheel drive Cooper, the Cooper S features MINI’s and BMW’s ALL4 four-wheel drive system along with a six-speed manual gearbox.

With increased power and torque distributed across more wheels, the performance aspect is exceptionally satisfying. Although I have driven sports cars before, I have never experienced a car as sporty as this.

One of the major reasons for upgrading was the interior. I admired how everything in the Cooper was easily accessible, with essential controls just a hand’s reach away from each other.

Moreover, the steering wheel allows for convenient access to various functions without diverting attention from the road, unlike the Cooper S which offers a touch screen as an optional feature. The system also includes Apple CarPlay, ensuring up-to-date navigation and seamless integration with smartphones.

Furthermore, considering the Cooper’s impressive load-carrying capacity, the practicality aspect was also met. The Clubman offers a 360-liter boot with the rear seats up and expands to 1,250 liters with the seats folded, along with additional storage beneath the boot floor.

As someone who enjoys driving, I prioritize a car that handles well. The Cooper’s short wheelbase, stable posture, and powerful engine make it a delightful drive, especially on winding roads.

Cars are not just means of transportation but sources of joy, offering a break from daily stress. They play a significant role in maintaining mental well-being.

Following the acquisition of the Cooper S, I had the opportunity to test its capabilities during a road trip, exploring various destinations before returning to London. The four-wheel drive system provided a sense of security in different road conditions, enhancing cornering stability and acceleration.

Despite the slightly firmer suspension and lower-profile tires, which demand caution over bumps, the exhilarating engine sound in sport mode compensates for any minor drawbacks.

I opted for financing to purchase my MINI instead of an outright purchase. While I won’t disclose the exact cost, similar models of the same age can be acquired for around £12,000 – £16,000 depending on specifications.

Before finalizing my decision, I extensively researched the MINI’s reviews compared to its competitors such as the Audi A3 Sportback, Mercedes A-Class, BMW 1 Series, VW Golf, and Skoda Fabia.

The MINI’s unique features, appealing aesthetics, and driving dynamics distinguished it from its hatchback rivals, offering a blend of practicality, comfort, and a luxurious interior.

In my brief experience with the Clubman Cooper S, I acknowledge that it may not be as comfortable as some other cars I have driven. However, its performance, handling, and overall driving experience make it a standout choice for me.

My decision to choose the MINI was not based on statistics or AI recommendations but on the personal connection I felt during the test drive. It was about finding a car that resonated with my driving preferences and brought a sense of joy and excitement on the road.
