“Hurricane Melissa Devastates Jamaica; Threatens Cuba and Bahamas”

Must read

A powerful storm struck Jamaica yesterday, causing widespread devastation and claiming several lives. Hurricane Melissa, with winds reaching 185mph, left a trail of destruction, including flattened homes, severed communities, and extensive flooding. Considered the “storm of the century,” Melissa was just shy of being the strongest ever recorded in that region. Among the 58,000 Britons on the island during the storm were Neville, the father of the late Stephen Lawrence, and relatives of footballer Raheem Sterling.

Forecasters are concerned that Melissa, now the most potent storm in Jamaica’s history, may escalate in destructiveness as it moves towards Cuba and the Bahamas. The Jamaican government had initiated evacuations from high-risk zones and shut down all airports, urging residents to seek shelter.

Witnesses on the island, like Rebecca Chapman celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary, described the eerie atmosphere preceding the storm, with birds vanishing and an unsettling roar from the sea. Tourist Andrew Tracey, stranded as his flight got canceled, shared his experience of the intense winds vibrating the hotel walls and his apprehension about the impending danger.

Amid the chaos, Michaela Menezes, a British national in Jamaica with her children, highlighted the urgency of seeking safety upon hearing news of the approaching hurricane. Authorities set up a crisis center to aid stranded Britons, emphasizing the severity of the situation and offering assistance to those in need.

The storm, ranked as the fifth-strongest Atlantic hurricane on record, led to widespread power outages and communication failures across Jamaica. Entire villages in remote areas faced isolation, complicating rescue efforts. The country, already economically strained, anticipates long-term repercussions from the storm’s impact.

In Cuba, nearly 900,000 residents were evacuated from vulnerable regions, and the US Navy took precautionary measures at Guantanamo Bay. Humanitarian aid organizations are mobilizing emergency supplies, though challenges exist due to limited resources and competing humanitarian crises worldwide.
