A man from London was sentenced to 28 months in jail for his involvement in a courier fraud scheme that targeted an elderly woman in Cheshire, resulting in the theft of thousands of pounds worth of cash and jewelry.
Sharmarke Ahmed, residing on Maysoule Road, appeared in Chester Crown Court on October 23 and admitted to handling stolen goods. The incident took place in the Malpas area of Cheshire, where the victim, a woman in her 90s, received a call from a man claiming to be a detective from Chester. The fraudster convinced her to hand over £11,000 in cash and jewelry valued at £16,000 under the pretense of safeguarding her possessions from local criminals.
The elaborate scam involved a lengthy phone conversation during which a password was established to identify the supposed ‘police officer’ who arrived at the victim’s residence to collect the items. The fraud came to light when the victim’s friend reported the incident to the police, who subsequently received multiple reports of similar courier fraud activities in the area.
Investigations revealed that the phone number used in the scam was untraceable and linked to a temporary prepaid service originating from Brixton, London. Further analysis confirmed Ahmed’s involvement, as CCTV footage captured him collecting the stolen items and boarding a coach back to London from Chester Bus Station.
Following thorough inquiries, MET Police officers apprehended Ahmed in London on April 1. Detective Constable Niall Dudley emphasized the prevalence of courier fraud and commended the arrest of Ahmed, urging potential victims to report such incidents promptly to prevent further exploitation.
