Although Kingstown appears authentic, it is a fictional setting inspired by Kingston, Ontario, in Canada, where a significant portion of the first season was filmed. The primary filming locations included Kingston Penitentiary and Stratagem Studios in Toronto. Additionally, Hamilton and Burlington in Ontario served as key backdrops for various scenes.
Subsequent seasons shifted production to Pennsylvania, primarily in Pittsburgh, with season two also utilizing locations like Lampe Marina and Presque Isle Bay near Erie. The current season is predominantly filmed in Pittsburgh, showcasing recognizable spots such as Brighton Heights and O’Brien’s bar.
Noteworthy locations like River Road in Mckeesport, PA, and Carson Street are frequently utilized for thrilling car chase sequences. When interacting with law enforcement, the McKees Rocks Police Department in Pittsburgh stands in for the King County Sheriff’s Office on the show.
Lead actor Renner has acknowledged the demanding filming schedule, often enduring long hours in freezing conditions. Mayor of Kingstown has posed a significant challenge for the Avengers star, being his first major role post his snowplough accident on New Year’s Day 2023. Despite concerns about his physical strength, Renner expressed both apprehension and excitement about returning to set.
