MI5 is facing a “new era” with increasing threats from foreign states like Russia, China, and Iran, according to Sir Ken McCallum, the Director General of MI5. Sir Ken highlighted that Russia, China, and Iran have contributed to a spike in state-based threats against Britain, leading to a 35% rise in the number of individuals under investigation in the past year. State actors are increasingly employing terror-like tactics, with MI5 discovering plots from foreign states intending to execute surveillance, sabotage, or violent acts in the UK.
Notably, children accounted for a significant portion of terror suspects arrested last year, with one in five of the 232 terror-related arrests involving minors under 17 years old. Concerns were raised by intelligence officials regarding the breeding of terrorism in dark corners of the internet, making it challenging to assess individuals’ online intentions.
To address the issue of youth involvement in extremist activities, Sir Ken introduced plans for an Interventions Centre of Expertise aimed at managing threats involving adolescents, mental health issues, or other complex risks.
