Popular actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, known for her role in “Never Have I Ever,” is set to star in a new Netflix film this week. In an exclusive interview, the 23-year-old Canadian actress discussed her upcoming role in Netflix’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s work, a project that has never been brought to the screen before.
Ramakrishnan takes on the role of brave orphan Beesha in the animated movie “The Twits,” based on Dahl’s classic short story. The film also features Ryan Lopez as her best friend, alongside British comedian Johnny Vegas and Hollywood star Margo Martindale playing Mr. and Mrs. Twit. Notable cast members include Emilia Clarke, Natalie Portman, and Nicole Byer.
Regarding her new role, Ramakrishnan praised director Phil Johnston for making the experience enjoyable, highlighting the positive atmosphere among the animation team. She expressed her excitement about voicing Beesha, comparing the character to her previous role in the 2022 animated film “Turning Red,” directed by Domee Shi.
In “Turning Red,” Ramakrishnan portrayed Priya, a supporting character with a deadpan voice. Reflecting on the contrast between Priya and Beesha, she noted that Beesha carries more weight as one of the main characters in the film.
The actress also shared her affection for Beesha’s character design, emphasizing the representation of a dark-skinned brown girl with features similar to her own. Netflix’s description of “The Twits” teases an epic battle between the cruel titular characters and a family of magical Muggle-Wumps and two courageous children. The film is set to premiere on Netflix on Friday, October 17.
