Nigel Farage is under pressure to denounce the outdated views within his party following comments made by one of his MPs regarding an “LGBT supporting” coalition. Danny Kruger, who recently switched from the Conservatives to Reform UK, expressed concerns about a mix of left-wing parties, equating support for LGBT rights with endorsing Hamas.
Critics have labeled Kruger’s remarks as antiquated and inappropriate, urging Farage to disavow them. This comes after Farage criticized Sarah Pochin, another Reform member, for controversial remarks about race but stopped short of calling them racist.
During a membership promotion event for Reform UK, Kruger, the son of TV personality Prue Leith, cautioned against the rise of a potential alliance supporting Hamas and LGBT rights leading the UK. He highlighted the competition from parties like the Liberal Democrats, Labour, and Greens, expressing concern about the country’s political landscape.
Kruger emphasized the importance of supporting Reform as a counterbalance to what he perceives as extremist tendencies in other parties. Polly Billington, a Labour MP, condemned Kruger’s statements, emphasizing the need to uphold British values of decency and respect.
Kruger failed to clarify his stance on LGBT rights when pressed by the media, emphasizing the incoherence he perceives in the opposing coalition. He warned against the possibility of an undesirable government coming into power and advocated for a sensible and moderate approach through voting for Reform.
A Labour source criticized Kruger’s comments, rejecting them as regressive and incompatible with mainstream politics. Kruger had previously sparked controversy in 2023 with his views on marriage, advocating for traditional family structures.
The recent controversy surrounding Reform UK follows contentious remarks made by Sarah Pochin about diversity in advertising. Despite criticism, Farage defended Pochin, stating that while her comments were poorly articulated, he did not believe they were racially motivated.
Reform UK has been asked to respond to Kruger’s statement, which has stirred further debate within the political landscape.
