Authorities have unveiled new information in the case of nine-year-old Melodee Buzzard, who has been missing for over two weeks, revealing a troubling development in the investigation.
The search for Melodee commenced on October 14 after concerns were raised by a school official regarding her extended absence.
Upon visiting the family residence and speaking with Melodee’s mother, 35-year-old Ashlee Buzzard, authorities found no sign of the young girl and were provided with no credible explanation for her whereabouts.
Newly released surveillance footage captured Melodee inside a car rental establishment in Santa Barbara on October 7, just a week before she was reported missing from her hometown of Lompoc, approximately 55 miles away from the rental shop.
The images show Melodee wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and what appears to be a wig different from her natural hair, as stated in a police report.
Investigators suspect that the wig may have been used to alter Melodee’s appearance, noting that her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, is known to wear wigs.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Ashlee rented a white Chevrolet Malibu and embarked on a three-day journey from Lompoc to Nebraska with her daughter.
Law enforcement officials are now focused on determining Melodee’s whereabouts during the trip and her current location.
The FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office has joined the search, indicating that Melodee was last seen with her mother on October 7 and may have traveled as far as Nebraska.
The rental car is no longer in Ashlee’s possession, and authorities have noted her lack of cooperation in providing information about her daughter’s location.
Melodee, due to her age and prolonged absence, is considered to be in a vulnerable situation.
Sheriff Bill Brown emphasized the ongoing efforts to locate Melodee, urging the public to come forward with any information that could aid in her safe return.
The Sheriff’s Office remains focused on ensuring Melodee’s safety and is dedicated to
