Starmer Urges Allies to Push Putin for Peace Talks

Must read

Keir Starmer emphasized the need for allies to push Vladimir Putin to engage in meaningful peace talks, citing the Kremlin leader’s lack of seriousness about resolving the conflict.

During discussions in London with over 20 partners, the Prime Minister outlined plans to intensify pressure on Russia by strengthening Ukraine’s military capabilities with advanced weaponry and imposing economic sanctions on Moscow.

Starmer underscored the necessity of taking immediate steps to unfreeze Russian assets to support Ukraine’s defense efforts, stating that Russia should bear the costs of its actions in Ukraine.

In a joint effort with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, Starmer condemned Putin for his continued aggression and disregard for peace, highlighting recent attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure.

Zelensky described Russia’s actions as a “campaign of terror” aimed at destabilizing Ukraine, particularly as winter approaches, and reiterated the urgent need for long-range missiles to deter further aggression.

International leaders, including NATO’s Secretary General, acknowledged the diminishing resources and strategic setbacks faced by Russia in the conflict, emphasizing the importance of sustained pressure and targeted sanctions.

Discussions are underway regarding the allocation of funds from frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine’s defense efforts, while efforts to disrupt the illicit oil trade funding the war continue to be a priority for European leaders.
