A young individual reportedly received a threatening message before being attacked with petrol and ignited in flames. Jacob Thompson, aged 19, is currently undergoing medical care in a hospital after sustaining severe burns covering approximately 32% of his body during the alleged incident on October 13. The burns, classified as third-degree, encompass his face, torso, arms, back, and legs.
According to authorities, just before the assault occurred, Aaron Valette, 19, displayed a plastic bottle containing a transparent liquid while warning Jacob by stating, “If you come any closer I’ll burn you.” Valette proceeded to pour the liquid on Jacob before setting him on fire. Prompt intervention by onlookers helped extinguish the flames in Coonabarabran, Australia, located in New South Wales.
Following the attack, Jacob was swiftly taken to a medical facility for treatment. Police have indicated that the incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute between two local families. Valette has been formally charged with causing severe bodily harm with intent and engaging in affray. Similarly, Mavis Chatfield, 45, faces charges of affray, with both individuals being denied bail.
In a statement to The Daily Telegraph, Jacob’s family expressed deep distress over the assault, noting its traumatic impact on Jacob and all witnessing family members. They highlighted the challenging period faced by Jacob, his immediate family, and relatives, with Jacob enduring significant pain and receiving medication for symptom relief.
Initially placed on life support, Jacob has shown slight improvements but continues to experience breathing difficulties. Despite the emotional toll, Jacob remains optimistic as he copes with the aftermath of the incident over the past fortnight. Currently receiving care at Concord Hospital, Jacob’s family has relocated from their hometown due to safety concerns.
To aid Jacob and his family, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to support his recovery from third-degree burns and associated medical expenses. The fundraiser emphasizes the severity of Jacob’s injuries, the emotional scars endured by his loved ones, and the forthcoming lengthy and arduous journey towards recovery and relocation for optimal treatment and well-being.
