A teenager, described as “deeply traumatised,” suffered severe burns over 32% of his body, including third-degree injuries to his face, torso, arms, back, and legs, following a horrific petrol attack in Coonabarabran, Australia. Jacob Thompson, 19, was allegedly targeted in the attack, believed to be part of an ongoing feud between two families in the small rural town.
According to reports, Jacob was approached by a group of individuals who doused him with a liquid before setting him on fire. Passers-by intervened to extinguish the flames, and Jacob was rushed to intensive care for treatment. His injuries were so severe that his own siblings initially struggled to recognize him in the hospital.
The family of the victim expressed deep trauma over the incident, emphasizing the emotional toll it has taken on Jacob and themselves. Despite facing significant challenges, Jacob remains positive as he copes with his injuries, which have caused breathing difficulties and required him to be on life support.
Following the attack, authorities arrested a 45-year-old woman, a 19-year-old man, and a 17-year-old girl in connection with the incident. The man was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent and affray, while the woman faced charges of affray. The teenage girl was released pending further investigation.
A fundraising page was established to support Jacob’s recovery journey, acknowledging the severity of his injuries and the long road ahead for his rehabilitation and medical care. The family provided updates on Jacob’s condition, noting some improvements but mentioning ongoing challenges with breathing issues, eye injuries, and a dislocated shoulder that require continuous monitoring and treatment.
