Timpson, a renowned shoe repair chain, has introduced a new service for trading in mobile phones. Partnering with gadget resell company musicMagpie and its owner AO, Timpson now allows individuals to bring their unwanted smartphones to any of their stores and receive instant cash. Recent data reveals that a significant 73% of adults in the UK possess at least one unused smartphone at home, with an average trade-in value of approximately £250, totaling an estimated £10 billion in unused smartphones nationwide.
While numerous online options exist for reselling devices, Timpson aims to cater to those who prefer a face-to-face approach, although similar high-street options are already available. The survey indicates that 68% of people prefer in-person device trade-ins, with a quarter emphasizing the importance of immediate payment.
Having initiated a trial period four months ago, Timpson and musicMagpie have now expanded the trade-in service to over 1,300 Timpson stores across the UK. John Roberts, the CEO of AO World, emphasized the convenience of the service, stating that customers can effortlessly receive cash within minutes for their old smartphones at any of the Timpson sites.
Furthermore, Steve Oliver, the managing director of musicMagpie, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with Timpson, expanding their reach and convenience for customers. Sid Hubbard, Timpson’s group director, highlighted the trust and friendliness of their expert colleagues, enhancing the high-street experience for customers. This new service aligns with Timpson’s longstanding commitment to repairing and repurposing goods, extending now to smartphone trade-ins in collaboration with musicMagpie.
