A truck driver was captured on video “watching the news” while operating a vehicle on a busy highway with a mobile phone placed in front of him. The incident, involving an XDP truck, was recorded near J22 for Winwick Interchange on the M6 at approximately 7.25am on Tuesday. A witness in another vehicle in an adjacent lane filmed a brief clip showing a mobile phone mounted on the dashboard above the steering wheel, seemingly displaying news content that the driver was watching while driving at a high speed.
The footage, labeled “Driver in morning rush hour on the M6 at Manchester. Unbelievable,” was shared by the Manchester Evening News. In the video, the person recording is heard remarking, “Casually watching the news while you’re driving the truck,” as the driver behind the wheel appears to take notice. XDP, a UK-based freight and parcel carrier, responded to the incident, stating that they treat such occurrences very seriously and have elevated the matter to their Operations Team for immediate review.
In a separate incident in August, a lorry crossed the central reservation of the M5 and traveled in the wrong direction down the motorway, narrowly avoiding a collision with a high-value Porsche. Peter Stone, 55, narrowly dodged the oncoming lorry between junction 28 and junction 29 while traveling northbound between Cullompton and Exeter. Despite the close call, no serious injuries were reported, and the motorway was temporarily closed in both directions for about an hour to manage the aftermath of the incident.
