UK Couple Finds Work-Life Balance in Thailand, Saves £1,000+

Must read

A couple from the UK has chosen to relocate to Thailand due to dissatisfaction with the work-life balance and high living costs in their home country. Roshni Ward, 30, and Louis Hunt, 33, made the move to Chiang Mai, Thailand, last September to escape their hectic lifestyle in Rye, East Sussex.

The couple has been delighted with the relaxed atmosphere, warm weather, and stunning architecture in Thailand. Their monthly rent in Chiang Mai is now only £300, including access to a gym and pool, while water bills are a mere £2.76. Other living expenses, such as taxis at £1.50 and takeaways at £2, are significantly cheaper than in the UK, resulting in savings of over £1,000 compared to their previous rent of £1,350.

Roshni, now working as a content creator, expressed their desire to move abroad due to safety concerns in the UK and the lack of work-life balance that left them feeling exhausted. The couple decided to make the move after a vacation in Thailand in December 2024, where they felt safer and more at ease compared to the UK.

After relocating to Chiang Mai, Roshni and Louis both left their UK jobs and transitioned to remote work. Despite earning UK wages, their living costs in Thailand are much lower. Their modern condo, equipped with amenities like a gym and swimming pool, costs only £300 per month, a significant decrease from their previous UK rent of £1,350.

In Thailand, utility bills are notably cheaper, with water costing £2.76 compared to £76 in the UK. Transportation is also more affordable, with a 20-minute taxi ride priced at £1.50. The couple has found that living in Thailand has substantially reduced their expenses, allowing them to enjoy a higher quality of life at a lower cost.

Furthermore, dining out in Thailand is much more economical, with takeaways ranging from £1.50 to £2 and a full meal at a restaurant costing just £8. The couple appreciates the slower pace of life, rich culture, and friendly locals in Chiang Mai, making it a place they have no intention of leaving anytime soon.
