“UK Households Embrace Internet TV, Freeview’s Future Uncertain”

Must read

Millions of households in the UK are currently utilizing the internet for both live and on-demand content viewing. A recent study, conducted on behalf of Sky, indicates that the majority of households could have access to internet-based TV services by the mid-2030s, leading to the potential retirement of traditional terrestrial TV platforms like Freeview.

Various alternatives to aerial-based TV viewing already exist, including Sky’s latest streaming offerings and the Freely service, which is affiliated with the team behind Freeview. Freely is now integrated into many new televisions, providing access to live and on-demand programs via a broadband connection.

As more internet-connected devices enter households, the trend indicates a shift away from traditional broadcast television towards streaming services.

Another challenge facing Freeview is the potential need to share radio frequencies with mobile operators after 2031, which could further diminish the viability of the current over-the-air transmission system.

The expenses associated with maintaining the aging terrestrial TV infrastructure are increasing, prompting discussions within the UK government regarding future strategies.

Nick Herm, the Group Chief Operating Officer at Sky, highlighted the opportunity for social inclusion through modern TV services. He emphasized the feasibility of a complete transition to internet-based TV in the 2030s, which could bridge the digital divide and result in substantial cost savings.

While some individuals embrace the transition to streaming services, there are dissenting voices, as evidenced by a petition with over 100,000 signatures opposing the discontinuation of Freeview. Concerns include the necessity of a reliable internet connection for streaming and the potential financial burden on households.

Lynette, an 80-year-old resident of Kent, expressed her reliance on Freeview for entertainment, information, and learning opportunities. She emphasized the simplicity and familiarity of traditional TV viewing compared to online platforms, citing issues with streaming services.

Further updates on the future of television services are anticipated in the near future.
